
Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on the 18th of July 1994, was raised in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was the daughter of a black dad and a white mom. She grew up with her mom's family. Her skin shade made her feel different during her teenage years. The family struggled financially. They were constantly moving and had to move 16 times to fund her father's job. Russell expressed her feelings about how despite the difficulties, Russell said that she was always a creative person in her early years. She wanted to become ballet dancer, then to be an artist. Russell was 18 when she began her first acting class. She saved the money from work to purchase a car and drove off to Los Angeles to audition. She would return to work once her savings ran out , before the audition process. The routine continued for four years, until she was offered her first TV part.
